Tintáye pictures had the privilege of capturing the opening of the Birch Trials historical exhibit at the Fraunces Tavern Museum & Restaurant in New York City.

This landmark event brought together the descendants of the black loyalists for the first time, highlighting their ancestors' pivotal roles during a critical moment in American history known as The Birch Trials.

The Birch Trials were a series of deliberations that determined the eligibility of black men, women, and children, to evacuate New York City with the British and Canadian forces at the end of the Revolutionary War. These deliberations, as well as the immense sacrifices made by the black loyalists who fought for their survival during that time, ultimately led to the evacuation of over 3,000 individuals, many of whom had endured a life of slavery.

Today, the birch trials exhibit, now a permanent fixture at the Tavern, invites New Yorkers and travellers alike to explore this chapter in history, showcasing the unwavering resilience and bravery of countless black American heroes, all of whom endured significant hardships to pave the way for a brighter future. Landmarks of this history are reflected in widely recognized works such as the Broadway musical ‘Hamilton,’ highlighting the rich legacy of these historical ancestors.

Capturing this event has been a profound privilege. It was a transformative evening particularly for the attendees as they connected with their heritage, and fostered a deeper understanding of the significant contributions of their forebears to American history. The exhibit stands as a testament to their enduring legacy, and the ever evolving journey toward equality and unity.
